How to Protect Your Business From a Phishing Scam

When it comes to phishing scams, hackers are relentless (and creative) in trying to get your sensitive information. For business owners, the risks are greater the more people you have on your network. There are ways to lower your risk and keep your network safe, here are a few ideas:

  1. Educate your employees/staff on identifying phishing emails. Hopefully, they know the basics of avoiding phishing scams, but you can’t assume. Make sure they know the red flags of an email that may be phishing: a weird-looking email address for the sender, the email message itself is full of grammatical errors and typos, or asking for information that isn’t something the employee would be responsible for on a daily basis. (i.e. They aren’t in accounts payable).
  2. Make sure your employees know what is and isn’t appropriate or safe to send via email. Yes, they will need to send sensitive information, that’s unavoidable. But they don’t need to email bank account numbers, social security numbers, or other extra-sensitive info.
  3. Choose your email security solution carefully. You want phishing emails to be blocked before they get into someone’s inbox. If they don’t see them, they can’t do anything with them! Savant Solutions can help you choose the right option for protecting your network and your employees.
  4. Don’t reuse passwords, and make sure your employees/staff don’t either. We’ve probably beat this point to death over the past couple of months, but really, it’s so simple and an important layer of security in keeping everything safe. Not only is it imperative, it’s FREE, so there’s literally no reason not to make sure you have strong passwords for each of your accounts.
  5. Have a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy in place. Since you can’t (and don’t want to) micromanage every email your staff opens, you need to have another line (or two) of defense against attack. Not sure where to start? We can help.
  6. Hire our firm to do a phishing attack against your employees.  The best way to educate your employees is by seeing how many of users are falling for phishing campaign.  This way you can educate your users and reduce the number who fall victim in the future.

Don’t make the mistake of assuming everyone on your network knows how to avoid phishing scams. Protect your business both by educating users and a thorough cybersecurity plan. You can’t foresee everything, and there are never any guarantees, but prevention is important and effective. Contact Savant Solutions today for help securing your business.
