Why You Need to Consider the IoT When it Comes to Cybersecurity

“The Internet of Things (IoT) continues to grow as a prime target for cybercriminals to exploit, according to a new threat report from security firm Symantec. The number of IoT attacks increased from about 6,000 in 2016 to 50,000 in 2017—a 600% rise in just one year, the report found.”

While IoT has not grown into the Star Trek-like world we all imagined, many people are adding a number of devices to their daily lives. From thermostats to speakers, smartwatches to smart fridges and more, networked devices are here to stay. However, their newness and novelty are somewhat blunted by the extreme security issues they present.

Unreliable software and limited security updates

These smart devices are all linked through your network, whether at home or in the office. Do you think your thermostat is protected from malware? Can the printer sense a security breach? And how often are these devices updated with new patches to protect them? Right now, probably not often if ever. There are a lot of IoT devices that are not patchable. Savant Solutions has the answer.

The problem is that once a hacker has breached your network through the most innocuous device, they can gain access to your servers, computers, and more. Your mission-critical data is now at risk because of these devices.

Backdoor to your mission-critical data

Additionally, some of those “innocuous” devices are connected to more sensitive data. For examples, watches and fridges may have your bank and/or credit card information stored. Sure, it makes your life easier, but there are significant risks. Especially as hackers get smarter on how to take advantage of these devices.

Savant Solutions can help you detect all the IoT devices in your enterprise and learn how to properly secure those devices. Your NAC (network access control) products such as Forescout, ISE, and ClearPass are not able to detect devices that are connected to your phone or workstation. We have the capability to detect what is connected to your devices (smartwatch, Bluetooth headset, wireless keyboard and/or mouse, etc.).

Good security from top to bottom can do a lot to protect you from hackers, malware, and more. We can’t predict every move they make, but we can make sure that you’re as safe as possible. Contact us today to learn more about how Savant Solutions can create a security plan just for you.
